Housing & Foreclosure Counseling

Housing and Credit Counseling Department provides counseling and education on various housing issues to the public free of charge. Our goals are to maximize homeownership retention, reduce foreclosure and educate first-time homebuyers about the purchase process.

Services

Financial Management

Learn how to create a budget first identifying all your expenses and income. You will identify your wants versus needs and possibly reduce your expenses in wants and needs categories to make sure to balance your income and expenses. We can get a credit report for you, explain what is on the report, how to report errors, and share with you what you can do to raise your credit score. We will talk about possible resources in the community to help you. You will identify your goals and create an action plan list and timeline with your counselor to accomplish your goals.

Foreclosure Prevention

We will explain options available to you whether you are still current or behind in payments, possible modification programs available for you to apply to, how to communicate with your loan servicer (bank), and complete a loan modification packet specific to your servicer needs.

Keep Your Home CaliforniaTo see specific requirements, download the flyer here (or click on the logo at the left). If you feel you may qualify, contact (530) 891-6931 for additonal information.

Homebuyer Education Workshops

Speakers will present general information on mortgage loan qualifications, real estate purchase agreements, home inspections, termite inspections, property insurance, the closing process with the title company, and budgeting and credit counseling. See Workshops for schedule of workshops.

Renter Readiness

We will help you improve your credit score in order to qualify for renting through credit report evaluation, reporting errors as well as share with you what you can do to raise your credit score. We will talk about possible resources in the community to help you. You will identify your goals and create an action plan list and timeline with the help of a counselor to accomplish your goals.

Credit Report

There is a $20.00 fee (money order only made payable to CHIP please) to run the report, which includes all three major credit-reporting agencies (Experian, Equifax and Trans Union). The review and counseling are free of charge. If you would like a "soft pull" of your credit (with two reporting agencies) the fee requires a $10.00 money order (for a single) or $15.00 (for a joint) made payable to "CHIP ". A soft pull will not affect your credit score. You may qualify for a free credit report depending on your circumstances.
